Food Worries--Your New Partner

They don’t tell you how much you’ll think about food and feeding. Within an hour of your baby’s birth you’re told to attempt breastfeeding and thus begins the new normal for each of us: constantly thinking about what and how to feed our children.

It’s intense. The advice is endless. The judgement is endless. Everyone has an opinion about breast vs. formula, BLM vs. purees, fresh vs. preserved, homemade vs. not, vegetables vs. fruit, portion sizes, sugar content, carbon footprint, vegan, vegetarian…IT NEVER ENDS.

We’re here to say that you are safe in this space. We love celebrating heritage foods. We love offering advice about how to find and prepare nutrient-rich foods for your baby (and yourself) because our community and our babies are most at risk of developing diet related diseases. However, this is not a judgement zone.

We will feature some recipes with meat or dairy or fish. Some will be vegan or vegetarian dishes.  Some recipes will be purees. Some recipes will be whole foods. Some recipes will be mostly fruits. Others will be mostly veggies. Some of our recipes will encourage shortcuts like canned or frozen ingredients.  Some will be made with farmer’s market finds and others with supermarket finds. You’ll see recipes made with locally grown ingredients and some with imported ingredients.

We do not believe in modeling supremacy here by telling parents what they must do--especially considering that current recommendations are just repackaged and appropriated versions of what our ancestors used to do anyway ::cue side eye::. Finally, we all have different, budgets, schedules, access, cultural practices and religious views. But, we all need to feed our babies. All of us. So, welcome to this space. Pull up a chair and we hope you’ll always feel safe here.
